Friday’s Confession: I’ve Got a Crush on Buzz

Friday, October 15, 2010

Friday’s Confession …

I’ve got a crush on Buzz Lightyear. Not really, but I fell in love with Disney On Ice’s Toy Story 3 when I attended the show at Phillips Arena in Atlanta on Wednesday. It’s not like someone had to twist my arm to get me to go since I’m a princess and all, ahem, but I didn’t realize how much fun I would have. When I was invited to attend I thought the kids would love it, and they did, but secretly they were my cover so I could go and get my inner child on – guilt free.

The night started with a private meet & greet where several Atlanta-area bloggers and their families enjoyed food, arts & crafts and of course some personal time with Buzz and Woody.

Somehow Miles always seems to find the food

My heroes! Yes, I really took a picture with them. Don’t worry the kids did, too.

Baby girl and her creation

After the reception we headed down to our seats to see the show.

We should’ve brought our skates ‘cause we were on the ice!

All of the characters looked awesome and the skating was impressive.

I was thrilled to pieces when my girl Minnie made an appearance.

I think Christie and I were having too much fun.

Kudos to the folks at Disney On Ice for a wonderful production and thanks for treating me my kids to an awesome night of family fun.

Running … Out of Debt

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

"This would be a much better world if more married couples were as deeply in love as they are in debt." --Earl Wilson, American journalist and gossip columnist

Husband posted that quote on his Facebook page the other day. Interesting, right? Makes you really think about the things that people put value on, and unfortunately, put first in their lives.

I love that Husband is on board with my Dave Ramsey obsessive new way of thinking. We’re six weeks into our Financial Peace University course and its truly changing the way we handle our money. Dave’s philosophies aren’t rocket science; in fact they’re extremely simple and straight forward. Cash rules. And, get this - don’t spend money you don’t have. Gasp! We’re such a debit driven society that the thought of actually saving money for something before you by it is almost unheard of. Oh, no we’ll just pay more for it afterwards, for the next 10-15 years.

While it’s hard to untangle the mess made from credit (some days running 18 miles seems easier) its definitely doable – and necessary. Just like training for a marathon you should set your goal, come up with a plan, realize it doesn’t happen overnight, then put one foot in front of the other and go for it. Yes, there’s a little sweat and sacrifice involved, but something tells me it’s truly sweet when you cross that finish line.

Atlanta’s Finest 5K: Running with Husband

Monday, August 9, 2010

Saturday Husband and I ran in the Atlanta Track Club’s annual Atlanta’ Finest 5K at Centennial Olympic Park.

About two weeks ago I got an e-mail that said, “quick sign us up.” Hmm, the last and only time Husband ran with me was for beer. This time it was because the corporation he works for was one of the sponsors; and because he wanted to run. I know he actually wanted to run because last year I ran it with some of his co-workers and he ever so supportively cheered us on from the sidelines. I’m sure he could’ve watched again but he chose to lace up his shoes and hit the road with the rest of us.

We started the race together, but I told him several times he didn’t have to stay with me. Yes, folks, Husband could run circles around is definitely faster than me. He decided to run the first two miles at my pace and said he would go on ahead for the last. There were two big hills in the third mile and neither of us wanted to burn out before them. When we crossed the second mile marker I pushed Husband on his way and cranked up my iPod. I decided to keep my steady pace and stayed aggressive with the hills.

I’m excited to say that it paid off. I PR’d the race finishing in 33:11, 26th out of 60 in my age group. Yes, that’s fast – for me. Husband finished in 31:23, but I’m sure he could’ve easily been under 30 if he wasn’t babysitting his wife. Next time, I’ll definitely encourage him to go for his.

Surprisingly, I only took a few pics.

Husband getting his music straight

Me ready to run

The finish line I was so happy to cross quickly

Sunday night Husband told me he found another race for us to do. Loving his interest I got excited until I saw THIS.

Gasp!

Oh, yeah. I didn't tell you, I'm a punk.

Hmm, what do you think? It might be my turn to cheer him on supportively from the sidelines.

Lucky Number 11

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

So I’m late, but fortunately I wasn’t late, ahem, that magical day when I walked down the aisle to marry Husband 11 years and 11 days ago.

May 8 is one of the most special days of my life. It’s my wedding anniversary and while I thank God everyday that he brought Husband to my life, I celebrate it even more on that day. This year I was out of town playing in a tennis tournament, it was Mother’s Day weekend and lots of stuff was happening that didn’t allow me to post so I’m doing it now. Yes, don’t worry; we didn’t let the day slip by without celebrating.

A clip from my wedding featured on TLC's "A Wedding Story, Husband put it on YouTube for our 10th Anniversary

Happy Anniversary, Husband! Thank you for being the husband, father, friend, lover and man that you are.

Bag Lady

Friday, April 30, 2010

Friday's Confession ...

I’m a sucker for my birthday … and a cute bag.

I’ve always been a big birthday celebrator. Even in my old age, ahem, Husband knows that I enjoy a little fuss and he’s such a good sport – he always delivers.

I came home on my birthday after taking Milan to gymnastics and found this on the front door.

Then there was this …

He knows me so well

And several packages filled with goodies leading up to this …

Right. I was suspect, too. It’s a garbage bag. Yikes!  But then I ripped gently opened it up and found this.

Gasp!

Which housed these...

Aww!

Thanks, Husband.

He’s such a slickster … and a sweetie-pie.

Sweetwater 420 Fest 5K: Will Run For Beer

Monday, April 19, 2010

Run Wifey Run

When I told Husband he should run a race with me he quickly told me his stock answer, “I don’t run.” When I told him he should run the Sweetwater 420 Fest 5K with me and they’d have ice cold beer waiting at the finish line for some reason he quickly changed his tune to “sure, sounds like fun.”

Hmm. I’m not questioning his motives but apparently I’m not the only one in the family who will run for beer.

Seriously, it was fun to have Husband join me for a run. We dropped the kids at my mom’s and hopped on MARTA so we wouldn’t have to deal with parking at the race. It didn’t start until 11 a.m. but the weather was comfortable – sunny and in the 70’s – just the way I like it. We ran through the Candler Park area – there were beautiful homes and the park was nice, but, um, can I just say I’m glad I didn’t know about the hills before I started running. They were killer, but definitely added to my sense of accomplishment – and justification for that beer!

Husband and I at my mom’s

Husband finished in 33:19 and I came in shortly after at 38:14. We joked that I was like Goldie Hawn in the movie Wildcats and he was one of the football players when she challenged them to run around the track. He’s got the speed but the distance is all mine. He was so sweet to come back and run up the last hill with me – definitely good times. While he says he might do some more 5K’s anything longer is still out of the question – beer or no beer. That’s fine by me since he’s always right there cheering me on at the finish line.

Pomaritas Anyone?

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

I like pomegranate juice. Who knew?

I didn’t. It’s always been one of those things I just assumed I didn’t like, so when the good folks at POM Wonderful offered to send me some I daringly said yes – and hoped that I would like it. And I did. Not just ‘cause I mixed it with tequila, ahem, but I drank it straight, too. And it was delightfully yummy.

Then I went to their website and saw a new study indicates the antioxidants found in Wonderful variety pomegranates can speed muscle recovery and reduce soreness after exercise and I was sold. It taste good and can help me in my quest to get fit and healthy – and it’s the bomb with tequila – yup, sounds like some super-juice to me.

Speaking of tequila, since it was Friday I decided to make a little drink for me and Husband with my new best friend POM Wonderful. I might as well be healthy while I’m indulging in a little weekend cocktail. Here’s how that went …

Husband liked it, too. I was really proud of my bartending skills because I normally stick to beer and wine, but this might be my new splurge-on-a-cheat-day specialty drink.

Here’s the Pomarita recipe I used from their website:

1 oz. freshly squeezed pomegranate juice* or POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice
1 oz. tequila
1 oz. Cointreau (I used Triple Sec)
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
1/4 oz. simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water dissolved together in cold water)
Salt and lime for garnish (optional)

It was super easy. Just mix everything together with ice in a shaker and you’re good to go.

Thanks to lovely folks at POM Wonderful for introducing me to 100% pomegranate juice. I had no idea that I was missing out. Are you?

The Definition of a Wife

Ask Wifey’s Q and A – Reversed

I DVR’d Oprah yesterday because I saw a commercial that the show would be about marriage. There were several interesting segments about women and marriage all around the world but it was something Elizabeth Gilbert, author of the new book Committed said that made me stop and think. She explained that a lot of women she knows want to be married but no one wants to be a “wife.”

Wow.

That made me question what exactly does that mean? And even more so, what’s the definition of a wife?

So, I looked it up.

According to Dictionary.com a wife is “a woman joined in marriage to a man; a woman considered in relation to her husband; spouse.”

Hmm. No surprises there, but does that really sum up what a wife is? So many words come to mind when I think about a wife. Partner. Spouse. Lover. Friend. Companion. Supporter. Backbone. Caregiver. Leader. The list could go on and on.

She went on to say that some of the “traditional” things that many wives take on in their households – cooking, cleaning, staying home to care for the kids - is probably the deterrent. While I may be known to complain about some of these things, ahem, (I really do have a list of reasons Why Wifey needs a Wife) I truly don’t mind doing some many of them. To me, being a wife is much more than washing some dishes or making sure the pantry is full. Hell, you can pay someone else to do that for you.

I want to be a wife. I chose to be a wife. I LOVE being a wife. I LOVE being my husband’s wife. It’s an honor and privilege to share the bond and the life that we have and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

How about you? What’s your definition of a wife? Wives everywhere want to know …

Why Wifey Needs a Wife: Reason #702

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

Yes, I could probably come up with more than 1000 reasons why I need a wife … and a chef, a housekeeper, a driver, a personal assistant, a laundry attendant, a nanny and a clone of myself since I do all these things and more. After looking at the long list of things I do daily, I decided if I had a wife (like me) I could possibly relax a little. Then I woke up … and started this list.

Here’s reason #702:

To Make Sure Husband Doesn’t Scare the Bejeezus Out of the Kids When I’m Not Home

I called Husband on the way home from tennis practice last night and asked him if the kids went to sleep alright and if they put the tooth my daughter, Milan, lost earlier in the day under her pillow.

Husband: “Yeah, they're fine but they did go to sleep a little late.”

Red flag number one.

Husband: “We didn’t put Milan’s tooth under her pillow cause she didn’t know what you did with the tooth and she didn’t know if the Tooth Fairy would come since she’s sleeping on the floor.”

Red flag number two.

Me: “Um, why is Milan sleeping on the floor?”

Husband: “Because she told me that bed bugs aren’t real, and I told her they are.”

Red flags number three through ten.

Me: “What?”

Husband: “She said ‘don’t let the bed bugs bite’ is just a saying and I told her that there really are bed bugs.”

Me: “Are you kidding me?”

Husband: “No, I didn’t want to lie to the girl.”

Me: “Um, dear, she’s six.”

Oh, but wait, it gets better.

Husband: “She was fine until she saw the picture.”

This is the point in the conversation where I almost dropped the phone.

Me: “You’re kidding me, right? You didn’t really show her a picture, did you?”

Husband: “Yes, I did. Hey, do you know what bed bugs look like?”

*Insert loud sigh here.*

Husband: “Do you?”

Me: “They look like ticks, dear.”

Husband: “Very good, that’s right.”

Ugh. Where is my wife when I need her?

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

Just because Husband earned some cool points by cleaning the house while I was away at Disney doesn’t mean that he earned the right to scare the bejeezus out of me. Apparently, he thought it be cute to leave a little surprise for me in the closet:

That’s just wrong, right? The volume is kind of low on the video but, trust me, that thing screams loud in person.

How about your family? Do you trick or treat … or try to scare the bejeezus out of each other, too? Scary wives want to know ...

Disney Magic

Wifey Travels

The past few months I’ve been traveling a bit more than usual. I like exploring new places and visiting ones that I already know and love. While I enjoy traveling with my family, most of my recent adventures have been without them. I’m fortunate to have my parents, my mother-in-law, my sister and most importantly Husband to take care of Wifey’s House while I’m gone.

Most recently the good folks at Walt Disney World invited me to spend some time with them to meet Princess Tiana, the star of the new Princess and the Frog movie and the first African-American Disney princess, during her debut at Magic Kingdom; and to explore some of the attractions and resorts on the property. I spent three magical days at Disney and will share several highlights with you over the next couple of weeks. What I didn’t realize was that Disney magic was taking place at my house, too.

Normally when I’m gone I’m happy to come back to the house still standing and everyone accounted for – and still in it. Seriously, I never worry while I’m gone – Husband is an excellent father – but let’s just say that I don’t always know what condition Wifey’s House might be in when I return. This trip, Tinker Bell must’ve come and spread some of her pixie dust on Husband because he knocked out his “honey-do" list and more. Not only was Wifey’s House clean, it was organized. While I was playing in the park, Husband, with a little help from my father, spent his vacation from work cleaning-out the garage, the junk-drawers in the kitchen, fixing the running toilet, putting a new fan in the bathroom, fixing the broken light fixtures in the house, putting together the new chair I won from Office Max and even cleaning the burnt smudge off the top of the stove. All this while taking care of my little pumpkins. Oh, he took them to get their real Halloween pumpkins, too.

What can I say, but the man is awesome.

My clean stove - trust me, you don't want to see the before pics.

My new bathroom fan.

My lovely new chair - thanks Office Max!

The princess at Cinderella's Castle.

OK, the REAL Princess Tiana making her Magic Kingdom debut.

My prince charming on vacation in September (he doesn't always stay home!)

I appreciate my wonderful Husband for renovating Wifey’s House while I was gone; my new family at Disney; and of course, the power of Disney magic.

How about you? What does your house look like when you come back from a trip? Do you have any secrets – or pixie dust – to share to get husbands to handle their “honey-do” lists? Moms on the go want to know …

And That's How the Fight Started

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

A little mindless marriage humor

One of Husband’s male friends e-mailed this to him and in turn he forwarded it to me. Coincidentally, he sent it on a night that I was desperately trying to bite my tongue and not start a fight …

AND THAT'S HOW THE FIGHT STARTED

One year a husband decided to buy his mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. The next year he didn't buy her a gift. When she asked him why, he replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!" And that's how the fight started...

My wife walked into the den and asked "What’s on the TV?"I replied "Dust.”And that's how the fight started...

A woman is standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, “I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a compliment.” The husband replies, “Your eyesight's damn near perfect.”And that's how the fight started...

My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, “I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 200 in about 3 seconds.” I bought her a scale. And that's how the fight started...

I asked my wife, “Where do you want to go for our anniversary?”It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation. “Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!” she said. So I suggested, "the kitchen?”And that's how the fight started...

My wife and I were watching "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, “Do you want to have sex?” “No,” she answered. I then asked, “Is that your final answer?” She didn't even look at me this time, just simply said “Yes.”So I said, “Then I'd like to phone a friend.”And that's how the fight started...

I tried to talk my wife into buying a case of Miller Light for $14.95. Instead, she bought a jar of cold cream for $7.95. I told her the beer would make her look better than the cold cream. And that's how the fight started...

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, “Unbutton your shirt.” So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, “That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me,” and she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, “You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten Disability, too.”And that's how the fight started...

Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.” My loving wife of 10 years replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?”And that's how the fight started...

I'm not sure who to credit these little gems to but they sure have a good sense of humor … and hopefully a good marriage, too.

The Party's Over

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

Husband turned 41 on Saturday and we celebrated his birthday all weekend long. While we’re not as young as we used to be – ahem, one of us is still in our thirties – we did a pretty good job partying throughout the weekend with family and friends.

Although the party may be over, I do my best to celebrate Husband all year long. Not only is he my favorite husband in the whole wide world, he’s a wonderful father, son, and friend; and I’m truly blessed to have him in my life.

Daddy's Girl - Round Two

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

When I sat down to write this Father’s Day post I read the one from last year and thought, “how am I going to top this one?” Then I realized, I don’t have to. It’s a sweet tribute to my favorite (and only) Dad, it’s one of my favorite posts, and most of you haven’t read it yet. Perfect. Well almost.

While I included a picture of Husband in the post I really didn’t share what a wonderful father he’s become. He’s loving, patient, authoritative, fun, dedicated, (this list could go on and on)… and most importantly an excellent role model for our children. I’m so proud of him, love him dearly, and appreciate all that he does for our family.

Now, without further ado:

Daddy’s Girl

Friday’s confession …

OK, I admit it, at 38 years-old, I’m still a bit of a daddy’s girl. Yes, I actually even call him “daddy” from time to time. And while he thought he got rid of me when he walked me down the aisle, he couldn’t have been more wrong.

Yes, I’m all grown up now and have the husband, kids, dog and even a little white picket fence. And while I must say it’s nice to relate to him on an adult level, to talk, socialize and even share a beer with my dad, they’ll always be apart of me that’s still his little girl. The one he gave horsy rides on his back when he came home from work; and taught to count in Spanish when he tucked me into bed; and coached my softball team when we lived in Colorado, and came to all my basketball games even though I wouldn’t jump for the rebounds; and taught how to drive in the parking lot of the local college so I could get my license at 16… the list could go on and on.

While I cherish all of my childhood memories, some of my favorite times are happening right now when I see my dad with my children. Sometimes when he and Milan are together, I see me, twenty, ahem, thirty years ago. Wow.

My dad “GP” and Milan

Me and my daddy

My “baby daddy.” I couldn’t resist.

My father-in-law with Miles. We miss you Pop Pop.

What about you? Are there any other daddy’s girls in the house? Ladies, do tell; and dads, have a very happy Father’s Day!
