A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

Just because Husband earned some cool points by cleaning the house while I was away at Disney doesn’t mean that he earned the right to scare the bejeezus out of me. Apparently, he thought it be cute to leave a little surprise for me in the closet:

That’s just wrong, right? The volume is kind of low on the video but, trust me, that thing screams loud in person.

How about your family? Do you trick or treat … or try to scare the bejeezus out of each other, too? Scary wives want to know ...

Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!

Disney Magic

Wifey Travels

The past few months I’ve been traveling a bit more than usual. I like exploring new places and visiting ones that I already know and love. While I enjoy traveling with my family, most of my recent adventures have been without them. I’m fortunate to have my parents, my mother-in-law, my sister and most importantly Husband to take care of Wifey’s House while I’m gone.

Most recently the good folks at Walt Disney World invited me to spend some time with them to meet Princess Tiana, the star of the new Princess and the Frog movie and the first African-American Disney princess, during her debut at Magic Kingdom; and to explore some of the attractions and resorts on the property. I spent three magical days at Disney and will share several highlights with you over the next couple of weeks. What I didn’t realize was that Disney magic was taking place at my house, too.

Normally when I’m gone I’m happy to come back to the house still standing and everyone accounted for – and still in it. Seriously, I never worry while I’m gone – Husband is an excellent father – but let’s just say that I don’t always know what condition Wifey’s House might be in when I return. This trip, Tinker Bell must’ve come and spread some of her pixie dust on Husband because he knocked out his “honey-do" list and more. Not only was Wifey’s House clean, it was organized. While I was playing in the park, Husband, with a little help from my father, spent his vacation from work cleaning-out the garage, the junk-drawers in the kitchen, fixing the running toilet, putting a new fan in the bathroom, fixing the broken light fixtures in the house, putting together the new chair I won from Office Max and even cleaning the burnt smudge off the top of the stove. All this while taking care of my little pumpkins. Oh, he took them to get their real Halloween pumpkins, too.

What can I say, but the man is awesome.

My clean stove - trust me, you don't want to see the before pics.

My new bathroom fan.

My lovely new chair - thanks Office Max!

The princess at Cinderella's Castle.

OK, the REAL Princess Tiana making her Magic Kingdom debut.

My prince charming on vacation in September (he doesn't always stay home!)

I appreciate my wonderful Husband for renovating Wifey’s House while I was gone; my new family at Disney; and of course, the power of Disney magic.

How about you? What does your house look like when you come back from a trip? Do you have any secrets – or pixie dust – to share to get husbands to handle their “honey-do” lists? Moms on the go want to know …

The Secrets of Happy Families

Friday, October 23, 2009

I’m a sucker for a good self-help book. I love inspirational information that not only motivates me but is entertaining, too. So, when the good folks at Wiley offered to send me Dr. Scott Haltzman’s latest book, “The Secrets of Happy Families: Eight Keys to Building a Lifetime of Connection and Contentment,” I quickly said yes.

I first came across Dr. Haltzman when the title of one of his previous books jumped off the shelf at me in the bookstore – “The Secrets of Happily Married Women: How to Get More Out of Your Relationship by Doing Less.” Um, hello. Who doesn’t want that? I bought the book and reviewed it at Wifey’s House. Imagine my surprise when Dr. Haltzman left a comment on my blog after a positive but critical review. He was extremely gracious and since then has been very supportive of my book and writing endeavors.

Dr. Haltzman struck gold again with the “The Secrets of Happy Families.” The book offers Dr. Haltzman’s professional insight as well as results from a 1,266 person survey where men and women reveal their family secrets on topics from sex to childcare. One of the things that resonated with me the most in the book was in Secret 1: Happy Families … Stick Together where he discussed defining and setting your family values.

Values. We all have them, but how often do we actually think about them or more importantly live by them. Do we say one thing but do another? The chapter opens offering the dilemma of a 13 year-old child encouraging his mother to buy him a 12 and under ticket to save money. Hmm. Such a common situation that often seems harmless, but is it? If we save a few bucks are our children learning that money is more important than honesty? I’m not preaching folks and I plead the fifth about my first trip to the Georgia Aquarium – my daughter really was two, ahem – but I think the chapter raises interesting points that often go over looked. It’s spawned me to think about my family values and I challenge you to do the same.

Have you ever taken the time to define your family values? And, are you on the same page with your spouse? Wondering wives want to know …

A New Addition at Wifey's House

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey's House

There's a new addition at Wifey's House. Gasp! Yes, it's a baby - a baby fish. I'd like for you to meet Ryan.

Ryan is my son's first pet fish. I say first because fish have a habit of, how shall we say it ... moving on quickly when their owners are only 8 years-old. Miles got Ryan over the weekend as a reward for his good report card and I'm hoping this will be a great opportunity for him to learn responsibility. He has to take care of Ryan, because no one else - ahem- will.

How about you? What creatures are swimming, slithering or running around your house? Do you allow your kids to have pets; and who's taking care of them? Zoo keepers Moms everywhere want to know.

Challenged Glassware

Wifey’s Weekly Q and A

Dear Wifey:

I have had the same dishwasher for five years and my wine glasses and other glasses just recently started having this white streaking/cloudy stuff on them. I have been using those Cascade ActionPacs for the past year. We do not put un-rinsed plates or glasses in the dishwasher so I don’t think it is film from fat/protein (hot water does not remove it). Any suggestions would help ... like should I clean the dishwasher with citric acid to prevent it?

- Mrs. Challenged Glassware

Dear Mrs. Challenged Glassware:

Great question! Since cleaning tips and tricks are not my forte, ahem, I’ve asked my favorite lifestyle blogger, The Broke Socialite, to help with your dilemma.

“I do believe that I can help with your reader's quandary. Her problem is likely not her product; but her water. Stemware can fall victim to years of washing in hard water...whether by hand or dishwasher. This ‘clouding’ can probably be removed by cleaning with vinegar. Soak the glasses in pure white vinegar for at least an hour, rinse with warm (not hot) water and dry with a lint-free cloth. It may take a few times to see a remarkable difference.

Should this not work, check out sales on great stemware because you'll need to invest (and it doesn't need to be expensive...check Tar-Zhay, Ross, TJ Maxx, Macy's) in a new set. If you buy gradually, it won't be so overwhelming.”

Thanks, Broke Socialite! That’s exactly what I would’ve said.

Blogalicious: The Wow Factor

Monday, October 12, 2009

The first annual Blogalicious Conference took place this past weekend in Atlanta and the first word that comes to mind is wow. Not only because “Your Wow Factor” was the theme of the conference but because the founders of the conference – the three lovely Justices from MamaLaw – really wowed everyone.

Everything about this conference delivered.

The content was excellent. The speakers and sessions were knowledgeable and informative.

The attendees were phenomenal. Intelligent, fun ladies excited to network and learn. (Yes, the conference is geared toward women of color but ALL races and ethnicities were welcomed and present. One of my favorite blog buddies, Bantering Blonde, summed up her experience about the conference here.)

The sponsors and swag were thoughtful and purposeful. There were wonderful events, exhibits and goodies that fit the target audience.

The W Hotel was stylish and swanky. And the food was absolutely delish!

The parties were fun and fabulous. Not only because The BlogRollers hosted one, ahem, but ALL of the parties were ones you didn’t want to miss.

Wow. Blogalicious09 raised the bar for blogging conferences. Kudos to MamaLaw and their title sponsor Sunkissed Mommy. It was first class, no drama and the best conference I’ve been to all year. In fact, I’m already packing my bikini (a girl can dream can’t she?) for Blogalicious10 in Miami.

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

It’s here. Blogalicious 2009. Here as in today and here as in Atlanta. And I’ll be there.

I’m looking forward to networking and learning at the conference and, yes, ahem, partying, too. Not only am I attending, but my BlogRolling partner, Christie, and I are hosting the Blogalicious Princess Celebration, sponsored by Walt Disney World on Saturday night. Can someone say par-tay?

So, I’m Blogalicious bound ... and will make sure to bring back lots of pretty pics.

Homecoming King

Wifey’s Weekly Q and A

Dear Wifey:

My husband’s college homecoming is at the end of the month and he wants to go without me. He says that none of his friends’ wives are going and he wants to hang with the boys. I’ve heard so many crazy stories about his college days and am a little worried about him going without me. What should I do?

- Mrs. Homecoming King

Dear Mrs. Homecoming King:

I understand that you have a little bit of anxiety about your husband heading back to his college homecoming without you, but do you really have anything to be concerned about? Ask yourself a few questions: how long ago was he in college; do I trust him; has he ever given me any reason to think that he would be unfaithful; and how would he feel if he knew I doubted him?

The answers to these questions should help alleviate your fears. Unless you truly believe he would act inappropriately – in that case you should explore why you think that and consider addressing the issue on a deeper level – plan a girlfriends’ weekend or catch up on some “me time” and send him on his way.

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

A little mindless marriage humor …

It’s Monday … and I figured we could all use a good laugh.

"Honey," said a husband to his wife, "I invited a friend home for dinner."

"What? Are you crazy?” responded the wife. "The house is a mess, I haven't been shopping, all the dishes are dirty, and I don't feel like cooking a fancy meal!"

"I know all that," says the husband.

"Then why did you invite a friend for dinner?"

"Because the poor fool's thinking about getting married."
