Sidelined and Spreading The Love

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

I’m 17 days away from running my first marathon and I’m in taper mode – meaning I’m cutting back on my miles to rest for the big day. In addition to tapering, my foot is still sore so I’m resting a little more than I’d like to.

I want to run, dammit, but I know I need to slow down so I’ve been in search of a little motivation. Fortunately, in the blogosphere motivation is easy to find. One of my favorite bloggers, Bobbi from NHerShoes ran the Chicago Marathon last Sunday on 10-10-10. In her recap post she takes you through race day so perfectly that if I wasn’t a runner I would be now.

Need a little motivation to get moving? Check out Bobbi’s post here.

Make sure to do something today to take care of you.

Feel Good, Live Positively Recap

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Our Feel Good ~ Live Positively ~ Be Blogalicious Tweet Up was a huge success last night. We ate, drank, chatted and had an engaging online question and answer session with nutritionist Michelle Stewart, The Nutrition Planner. While our livestream had some technical difficulties it all worked out wonderfully – just ask the online winner of a brand new iPad – Aliah Davis-McHenry.

Dana Jones was our in person winner …

Dana, Me, Christie, LaKeidra Veal from Coca-Cola, and Intern Sunny showing off Dana’s new toy

But everyone walked away with goodies …

I really wanted that super cute lunchbox!

A huge thank you to our friends at Coca-Cola who sponsored this event and to everyone who joined us in person and online. To learn more about the Live Positively initiative please visit LivePositively.com; and, make sure to do something today, to take care of you!

Motherhood Madness

Monday, September 13, 2010

There’s some days when I feel like I’ve got this motherhood thing on lockdown and I’m completely in control; and there’s some days that I wonder how did I get here and what the hell am I doing?

Real talk, folks.

Fortunately, when I have those I-have-absolutely-no-clue-what-to-do-moments I have a wonderful support system to give me guidance. This morning thank goodness one of my girls was there to talk me off the ledge and make me realize I’m not doing so bad; that I’m actually doing everything that I should be – that everyone has these moments and that I’m completely normal. Well, completely normal in this situation. Ahem.

School, grades, homework, attitudes, friends, play-dates, activities, did I mention attitudes, can be extremely overwhelming sometimes; but that’s just part of parenting.

When I let it out and bounce it off another mom somehow it makes it more manageable. How about you? When motherhood madness kicks in – especially on a Monday – how do you handle it? Moms on the edge everywhere want to know …

3Gs: Good Humor, Good Times, Good Advice

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

When I say I ran all day long yesterday I mean it – literally. Ok, not actual running, although I did get three miles in, but I was on-the-go!

It started at an ice cream social sponsored by Good Humor and hosted by the fabulous Jennifer James of Mom Bloggers Club.

Jennifer and me

Don’t worry, I didn’t eat any ice cream – gasp!

But it looked absolutely delicious!

I did get to chat with some of my favorite local Atlanta bloggers and escape my usual Monday morning madness. Thanks, Good Humor!

After picking up the kids we headed to my mother’s house to celebrate my grandmother’s 87th birthday.

Isn’t she just fabulous?

G-Ma and my kids – I just LOVE her!

After dinner – yes, I skipped the cake – Husband and I had our first Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University class. Can I just say I’m so excited to make some changes? There’s so much valuable information in each session but one thing that really stood out this week was the quote, “Building wealth is a marathon, not a sprint.”

Now they’re talking my language. (Did I really just write that?) Just like running, you have to take your time and build up your stamina. Marathon running doesn’t happen over night. Neither does getting out of debt and increasing your wealth. But, you do have to start to be able to cross the finish line. Taking that first step is hard but it’s the only way to make it happen. Then you have to be patient and take things in stride.

Good advice, right? Definitely easier said than done. Here’s hoping I can sprinkle some of my marathon mojo on my checkbook, too.

EVO '10: The Evolution of Me

Monday, June 28, 2010

At the beginning of 2010 I declared this the year of “I can.” So often I’m quick to come up with reasons why I can’t do something which I truly believe is a form of self-sabotage – or protection. If I stay inside my cozy little comfort zone I don’t have to risk being disappointed or even worse, embarrassed. Gasp! It keeps life easy, right? Wrong. There’s a huge problem with that. Little risk = little reward. Come on and say it with me, “Keep doing what you’ve been doing and you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting.”

Fast-forward to the past few days I spent in Utah at the EVO ’10 conference – The Evolution of Women in Social Media. Not to be too hokey, ahem, but I believe that things happen for a reason. We are exactly where we need to be when we need to be there. The theme of “evolution” could not have been any more fitting for my mindset. I went into the conference thinking about my evolution and walked out affirmed and inspired.

Change is necessary. It’s a part of life and it happens whether we want it to or not. It can be scary as hell, but the beautiful thing about change is it doesn’t have to bad. Sometimes it happens to you, and sometimes you can make it happen. I’m not sure about you, but I prefer the latter.

At one of the many insightful sessions I attended three powerful, dynamic and memorable women (the super-talented Carol Roth, Liz Strauss and Ghennipher Weeks) challenged us to take what we've learned and figure out how we are going to incorporate it into our lives. One of the many lessons they drilled home is to know your goal and where you are going. Very logical, but so often so many of us forget to take that very important first step.

For me part of that is not letting my New Year’s goal of “I can” fizzle out in the second half of the year. In addition to identifying my business benchmarks, it’s climbing out of my comfort zone, taking risks and evolving. I figured there was no time like the present so at EVO ’10 I …

… took a gondola ride up the side of a mountain even though nosebleed seats in a stadium could easily send me into a panic attack.

… roomed with people I’d never met and stayed up chatting way past my bedtime like we were old college buddies.

… ran outside in the high altitude even though the security of the plush fitness center screamed my name.

… did the famous Ziprider at Park City Mountain Resort flying down the side of a mountain suspended high in the air from a cable at speeds up to 50 mph. Again, the whole-I'm-a-punk-with-heights thing made this HUGE for me.

… danced the "Cupid Shuffle" and the "Hokey Pokey" at the conference’s closing party even though I can’t dance for shit I’m rhythmically challenged. And, no, I wasn’t drunk.

The courageous Mommy Niri and me after stepping off the Ziprider

These may seem like small feats to some but for me they were scary, exciting and fun elements in the evolution of me. And, like the song says, “that’s what it’s all about.”

Workin’ It Out with Jane Fonda & Friends

Thursday, May 6, 2010

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you that I was invited to attend the first World Fitness Day, the brainchild of the fabulous Jane Fonda. Well, on May 1st I and approximately 1,500 people gathered in the Georgia Dome while 46,000 checked in via the live webcast as we got our workout on with several fitness celebrities including Billy Blanks, Denise Austin, Debbie Allen and Richard Simmons. To say it was fun was an understatement. The energy was high and laughs were a plenty while I sweated it out with several of Atlanta’s blogging elite. Here are a few pics from the day:

Billy Blanks and his daughter showing some moves on the press line

Richard Simmons and Billy Blanks goofing off for the cameras

Debbie Allen still instructing people to pay – in sweat

The Pointer Sisters entertained the crowd after the workout. They’re still sounding and lookin’ good.

Harry the Hawk came by and showed me a little love

Bloggers unite before the workout

Jane Fonda and the fitness gurus – she looks fabulous

Is texting while exercising illegal? We all were tweeting away.

Ludacris came and kept the crowd moving

I didn’t find my old leg warmers but I did rock this funky wristband

Plans are already in the works for the second annual World Fitness Day. I’ll be there; I hope you will, too!

WifeSavers: Bringing Sexy Back

Monday, May 3, 2010

What do you get when you combine 10 women, 10 chairs, a few poles, some high-heels, the best sex columnist on the web and the most popular sensual dance studio in Atlanta? The BlogRollers’ first WifeSavers: Bringing Sexy Back event, of course!

A few weeks ago My BlogRollin’ partner, Christie, and I sent out an e-mail to a couple of our bloggy-buddies asking them if they’d be interested in attending the launch of our new WifeSavers series.

WifeSavers is a series of events and experiences for brides-to-be, newlyweds and veteran wives created to help them thrive in the throws of marriage. The series offers a variety of individual events geared toward enlightening and enhancing one aspect of wifehood including exercise and fitness, cooking, intimacy, personal makeovers, home décor and repair, and auto maintenance. Informative and entertaining, WifeSavers arms wives with tips, tricks and tactics to help them be the best they can be.

We were met with a resounding, um, hell yes! In fact, all the slots filled up so quickly we didn’t get to open it up to our WifeSavers VIP Club like we planned. So, last Friday night, ten of us got together to learn some new dance moves at Pole La Teaz in Atlanta. Our fabulous instructor and co-owner of Pole La Teaz, Ro, was awesome. Not just at moving her hips, but at encouraging us to unleash our inner sex-divas that so desperately wanted to come out. After learning how to work the chair, we sat in them, sipped some wine and chatted with sex columnist and author of "The Mominatrix's Guide to Sex: A No-Surrender Advice Book for Naughty Moms" Kristen Chase. Kristen shared some tips from her new book about recharging your sex-life and led us in a candid, ahem, discussion about – sex! It was informative, exciting and refreshing to tackle a subject that’s so taboo, but so important in marriage.

This was our second trip to Pole La Teaz, you can read about our first adventure here. If you’re ever in the Atlanta or Houston area make sure to put Pole La Teaz on your list; and if you don’t already have "The Mominatrix's Guide to Sex," it’s a must, go get your copy here!

RunWifeyRun

I’m so excited to announce the launch of my new RunWifeyRun event with my BlogRollin’ partner, Christie. In case you haven’t noticed, I’ve kind of gotten into running a little bit. We’ll, it’s done wonders for my health, my weight, and even my sanity, ahem, (we all need a little release) so I decided I want to share the good feelings and benefits with you.

Introducing the inaugural Get Moving! Race & Relax event in Atlanta. Fifteen women will join forces and get moving by walking or running in the Virginia Highlands Summerfest 5K (3 miles) Road Race on Saturday, June 5, 2010. Afterwards, the ladies will indulge in a post-race celebratory brunch and enjoy other special treats. Created to inspire women to take care of themselves, Get Moving! focuses on the importance of physical exercise and making time for you. It’s the first event in our RunWifeyRun initiative – a WifeSavers series designed to help wives be the best that they can be.

Starting today participants will support each other via social media by tweeting, facebooking or blogging about their journey leading up to, during and after the event. They will receive the official Virginia Highlands Summerfest 5K race registration and race swag bag; a post-race celebratory brunch, a spa gift certificate; suggested training program/schedule and resource list; train to manage your pain with the Red Recovery Routine and a tart bottle of cherry juice courtesy of the Cherry Marketing Institute; a Get Moving! Race & Relax, Powered By Red race-day T-shirt sponsored by the Cherry Marketing Institute; a Get Moving! swag bag filled with indulgent goodies; special surprises; and most importantly they will get moving and hopefully continue to take care of themselves and their bodies.

I’m thrilled that several of my bloggy buddies have already signed on as VIP Movers and will be joining me for this journey – the fabulous Broke Socialite, Krystal at KrystalGrant.com, and The Divine Miss Mommy. We’re also excited that the lovely Joan of All Trades (who is about to give birth any moment) and my sister, new mommy NikkiD13, are also signed on and ready to Get Moving! Fitness is much more fun when you’re surrounded by friends!

I’d like to extend a special thank you to the Cherry Marketing Institute for sponsoring part of this important event. Cherries have such a high level of disease-fighting antioxidants and are an excellent choice for pain relief and exercise recovery. They are sure to help us as we start exercising and Get Moving! I encourage you to learn more about cherries here and follow them on Twitter at @choosecherries.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to Get Moving! You can join us now by registering here. Hint, hint – there’s a discount if you are a WifeSavers VIP. You can also follow our journey on Twitter; we’ll be using the hashtags #Race&Relax and #RunWifeyRun.

Finally, I’d like to extend my appreciation to all of you who have been so supportive of my running adventures. Your encouragement and kind words have been extremely motivating and hope that in some way I can return some of that love to you!

Right to Refuse?

Friday, January 8, 2010

I recently wrote a parenting feature for Upscale Magazine that tackles the touchy topic of parental rights when it comes to refusing medical treatment for their children. The article, “Thin Line: What Parental Rights Do Moms and Dads Have When Uncle Sam Gets a Say?” in the December/January 2010 issue, highlights several real-life scenarios and sheds some light on how and when the law can intervene.

The article also includes a comment from fellow blogger Liseth Araya at Chic Mommy USA, Holistic Living for Today’s Mom. If you pass a newsstand, make sure to check it out!

A Sneak Peek Inside Wifey’s House

Apparently, I’m not only in training for a marathon, but for The Sugar Coma Tour, too. That’s right, it’s a good thing I’m continuing to log miles in my journey to run my first marathon because I am also doing an excellent job logging sugar. Gasp!

When my good friend The Broke Socialite (TBS) sent me an invite to be a Sugar Baby on her upcoming Sugar Coma tour I immediately responded – "Um, Yes! You had me at Sugar."

This is the one time of year that I completely and willingly allow myself to indulge in my undying love for sugar. During the holidays I bake, and eat –ahem, all the sweets I desire: pound cake, Christmas cookies, key-lime pie, cheesecake, and just about anything having to do with chocolate.

Mmm, Chocolate Cream Pie! One of my favorites!

So, to say TBS has good timing with her upcoming Sugar Coma Tour is an understatement. On January 16th, 2010, she is hosting some of her friends in social media (and real life, too) on a whirlwind tasting tour of some of Atlanta's bakeries, cupcakeries and sweet spots. We'll meet pastry chefs, taste new recipes and enjoy the venues. This is the first of several swanky soirees the fabulous TBS is planning and guess what ... if you live in the Atlanta area there’s opportunity for you to be involved, too! Visit TBS here to learn more details.

How about you? Do you have a sugar – or sweet tooth, too? What’s your favorite sweet to eat during this time of year? Sugar Mamas want to know …

Wifey’s Weekly Q and A – Sort of

Earlier this week I received a tweet from the fabulous Aliya S King inviting me to weigh-in on a post she wrote about marriage. Since she’s such a talented writer I quickly popped over to see what she had going on.

Her post, Is My Husband the Boss of Me?, tackles the classic me-Tarzan-you-Jane-can-my-husband-tell-me-what-to-do-cause-I’m-an-independent-woman question through her entertaining and funny recap of her husband’s class reunion. Her dilemma: what to wear, what to wear!

I, of course, ahem, shared my two-cents in her comments and invite you all over to read her post and weigh-in as well. It’s a good read, posing a good question, Is My Husband the Boss of Me?
